Shravana Putrada Ekadashi: Vrat Katha

The Ekadashi that falls in the Shukla Paksha of the month of Shravana is known as Putrada Ekadashi. This Ekadashi is especially observed for the blessing of children and their well-being. Worshipping Lord Vishnu and observing a fast on this day is believed to bless childless couples with children. Let us now learn the story associated with this fast.

According to ancient legend, in earlier times, there was a pious and powerful king named Mahijit, who ruled the city of Mahishmati. He was charitable, truthful, and a beloved ruler, but one sorrow always plagued him: that he had no children. In his quest for an heir, the king performed various religious rituals such as yagyas, havans, worship, fasting, and charity. But it went all in vain.

One day, the king invited learned Brahmins and sages to his court and expressed his deep concern. He asked, “I have followed dharma all my life—then why am I deprived of children?” The Brahmins meditated and reflected upon his past life. They said, “O King, in your previous birth, you were a wealthy merchant, but your heart was extremely hard. One day, a hungry Brahmin came to your door asking for food, but you sent him away empty-handed. As a result of that sin, you have been denied the joy of parenthood in this birth.”

The king humbly asked, “O sages, please suggest a way by which I may be blessed with a child in this life.” The sages replied, “Observe the fast of Shravan Shukla Ekadashi, which is known as the Putrada Ekadashi. Worshipping and fasting on this day in devotion to Lord Vishnu is highly beneficial for those seeking children.” The king observed the fast with complete devotion and followed all the prescribed rituals. By the grace of Lord Vishnu, the queen soon conceived, and in due course, a radiant and virtuous son was born. That prince later became a just and dharmic ruler himself.

This story teaches us that with faith, devotion, and discipline, even the sins of previous births can be nullified. Couples who wish to be blessed with children should certainly observe the Shravan Putrada Ekadashi fast.
