When Indra’s Wife Shachi Tied The First Rakhi

According to ancient legend, there was once a fierce battle between the gods (Devas) and demons (Asuras). Under the leadership of the demon king Vritraasura, the Asuras were gaining power, and the gods found themselves in a weakened position. Worried about her husband Lord Indra, queen Shachi (also known as Indrani) sought advice from Sage Brihaspati. He advised her to prepare a sacred thread or a Raksha Sutra and chant mantras over it on the day of Shravan Purnima, then tie it on Indra’s wrist for his protection. 

Shachi did as instructed. She performed a ritual and tied the sanctified Raksha Sutra on Indra’s wrist while praying for his safety and victory. Strengthened by this protective thread, Indra gained courage and emerged victorious in the battle. From that moment, tying a Raksha Sutra on Shravan Purnima became a tradition, which eventually evolved into the celebration of Raksha Bandhan.

The Story Of Draupadi And Lord Krishna

Another famous story comes from the Mahabharata. During the battle where Lord Krishna killed Shishupala with his Sudarshan Chakra, his finger got injured. Sitting nearby, Draupadi immediately tore a piece of her saree and tied it around Krishna’s bleeding finger to stop the blood. 

Deeply moved by this gesture, Krishna promised to protect Draupadi for life. This promise was fulfilled during the infamous episode of Draupadi’s disrobing (Cheer Haran), where Krishna miraculously saved her honor by endlessly extending her saree.
