Significance Of Kajari Teej

Kajari Teej is not a religious fast. It is a vibrant celebration of feminine devotion, love, and folk traditions. This festival is observed on the Tritiya of Krishna Paksha in the Bhadrapada month and holds deep significance, especially for married women. It comes after the lush greenery of Shravan and Hariyali Teej and is rooted in devotion, family, harmony, and folk music.

The most important aspect of Kajari Teej is that on this day, women observe a strict Nirjala fast and worship Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati, praying for their husband’s long life and marital happiness. This day is considered just as auspicious and fruitful for married women as Karva Chauth or Hariyali Teej.

On Kajari Teej, women sing traditional Kajari songs, which beautifully express emotions related to monsoon, love, longing, and life. In villages, women swing on decorated jhulas (swings), sing in groups, and celebrate the joy of the festival together. It is believed that by observing this fast and performing the rituals, one not only strengthens their married life but also brings prosperity, peace, and happiness into the home. Worshipping Goddess Parvati on this day is said to grant women eternal marital bliss and remove any obstacles in their marital journey.

Significance Of Worshiping The Moon On Kajari Teej

The festival of Kajari Teej is not limited to just fasting and folk songs. It also holds a deeply spiritual tradition of worshipping the Moon. Especially in North India, it is believed that offering Arghya to the Moon on this day is essential. Doing so is said to purify the mind, stabilize thoughts, and bring good fortune.

In astrology, the Moon is considered the significator of the mind and emotions. Women observing the fast spend the entire day without food or water, often experiencing mental and physical fatigue. In such a state, gazing at the calm and gentle Moon at night and offering Arghya brings not only mental peace but also helps in restoring emotional balance. It is also believed that the Moon influences a woman’s nature and emotional well-being, which makes moonrise viewing and offering on Kajari Teej especially auspicious and spiritually rewarding.

Kajari Teej 2025: Puja Vidhi

  • On this day, women begin by taking a ritual bath in the morning and making a firm vow to observe the fast. The fast observed is nirjala, meaning without food or even water throughout the day.
  • The courtyard or puja space is cleaned and purified using cow dung, creating a sacred area for worship.
  • A small clay pond or reservoir (Kund) is made, which symbolizes Goddess Kajli (Kajari Mata).
  • Into this clay pond, women offer neem branches, mango twigs, a figurine or image of Kajari Mata, along with fruits, vegetables, and leaves as part of the ritual. Light a ghee lamp and perform Aarti of Kajari Mata.
  • Women gather in groups and sing traditional Kajari songs to the beat of the dholak, celebrating the essence of the festival with music and devotion.
  • At night, after offering Arghya to the Moon, the fast is broken. Traditionally, the first sip of water is taken from the hands of the husband, marking the completion of the vrat with blessings and love.

Kajari Teej Vrat Katha

According to a mythological legend, a poor Brahmin and his devout wife lived in a small village. They were extremely poor, but the woman was deeply religious and a sincere devotee of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati. After the month of Shravan, when the month of Bhadrapada began, the woman resolved to observe the Kajari Teej fast, firmly believing that this fast would bring longevity to her husband and peace and prosperity in their lives.

On the day of the fast, she woke up early, bathed, and began a strict nirjala vrat, worshipping Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati with deep devotion. However, her biggest concern was what she could offer to the deities as prasad since there was nothing in the house to eat. After searching for a long time, she finally found a raw piece of pumpkin (kacha petha). She washed and cleaned it carefully, and with pure devotion, offered it to the deities as bhog.

That very same day, the queen of the village was also observing the Kajari Teej fast. She had prepared lavish dishes in gold and silver utensils and performed the puja in a temple adorned with jewels. However, her heart was filled with pride and showmanship, not devotion. In the evening, Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati decided to test the devotion of both women. Disguised as sages, they first visited the humble home of the brahmin woman and asked for the raw petha she had offered as bhog. With a smile and love, she immediately gave it to them.

Pleased, the sage, who was actually Lord Shiva, said, “O Devi, we are deeply pleased with your faith, devotion, and pure heart. Your home shall soon be filled with wealth and prosperity, and your husband will be blessed with a long and healthy life.”

After this divine blessing, miraculous changes occurred in the couple’s life. Their poverty vanished, the husband’s health improved, and the couple lived a blissful, prosperous life thereafter.

This story signified that true devotion and sincerity matter more than material offerings, and that the grace of the divine is drawn towards humble hearts filled with love and faith.
