Hariyali Teej 2025: Vrat Katha

The festival of Hariyali Teej is celebrated on the Tritiya tithi of the Shukla Paksha in the month of Shravan. This fast is mainly observed by married women to ensure a blissful married life and to attain eternal marital bliss and good fortune. The main legend associated with this fast revolves around Goddess Parvati and Lord Shiva.

According to the Puranas, in her previous birth, Goddess Sati desired Lord Shiva as her husband. However, her father, King Daksha, insulted Lord Shiva, which deeply hurt Sati. As a result, she sacrificed her life by jumping into the sacred fire of her father’s Yagna. Goddess Sati was then reborn as Parvati, the daughter of King Himavan (Himalaya). From childhood, Parvati considered Lord Shiva to be her husband, and with this goal in mind, she undertook severe penance. She gave up food and water and meditated in the forests in complete solitude for years. Her intense devotion and penance shook the entire universe.

Though pleased with her devotion, Lord Shiva decided to test her love and determination. He sent the Saptarishis (seven great sages) to her. The sages tried to dissuade her by saying, “O Parvati! Do you really want to marry an ascetic, a carefree soul who wears tiger skin and resides in cremation grounds? A prince would be more suitable for you.” But Parvati remained firm in her resolve. She replied, “For me, Shiva is everything. I have already accepted him as my husband.”

On the Tritiya tithi of Shukla Paksha in Shravan, Lord Shiva finally appeared before Goddess Parvati and accepted her as his divine consort. On this sacred day, in the presence of all the gods and sages, their celestial wedding was solemnly performed.
