Chaitra Purnima Fast 2025: Vrat Katha
According to an ancient legend, a wealthy merchant and his wife lived in a town. The merchant’s wife was a devoted worshipper of Lord Vishnu and performed prayers with great faith and devotion every day. However, her deep devotion irritated her husband, and one day, in anger, he expelled her from the house.
With nowhere to go, the merchant’s wife wandered into the forest. As she walked, she saw four men digging the ground. Approaching them, she said, “Please allow me to work with you.” Moved by her request, the men agreed and gave her a job. However, as she worked, blisters formed on her hands due to the laborious task. Seeing her suffering, the men suggested that she stop digging and instead take care of the household chores. She agreed and was taken to their home, where she began cooking meals for them.
Every day, the four men would bring four handfuls of rice, which they shared equally among themselves. The merchant’s wife was troubled by their frugal meals and suggested that they bring eight handfuls of rice instead. Taking her advice, the men started bringing more rice. The woman offered the first portion to Lord Vishnu before serving the food, believing it to be an offering to the divine. To everyone’s surprise, the food became exceptionally delicious. The four men, amazed by its taste, asked her the secret behind it. She replied, “This food is first offered to Lord Vishnu, which is why it tastes so divine.”
Meanwhile, the merchant, after sending his wife away, began suffering from hunger and regret. Unable to bear his misery, he set out to search for her and eventually reached the same forest. There, he saw the four men digging the ground, just as his wife had seen before. Desperate for help, he requested them to give him a job.
The men agreed, but soon, his hands were covered in painful blisters, just like his wife’s had been. They then asked him to assist with household chores instead. Following their instructions, the merchant went to their home, where he recognized his wife, but she did not recognize him because she was veiled.
As usual, before serving food, the woman offered it to Lord Vishnu. But when she was about to serve her husband, Lord Vishnu held her hand and asked, “What are you doing?” She replied, “I am serving food to everyone, my Lord.”
Seeing this divine intervention, the four men requested to have a vision of Lord Vishnu. Upon their earnest request, Lord Vishnu appeared before them, blessing them with his divine presence. Witnessing this miracle, the merchant realized his mistake and begged his wife for forgiveness. He also pleaded with her to return home with him.
Before leaving, the four men, who turned out to be her brothers, gifted their sister immense wealth and bid her farewell. From that day on, the merchant became a devoted follower of Lord Vishnu and dedicated himself to His worship. It is believed that observing the Chaitra Purnima fast brings the blessings of Lord Vishnu, Lord Hanuman, Lord Rama, and Goddess Sita, ensuring prosperity, peace, and spiritual growth.
