Significance Of Nirjala Ekadashi

In Hinduism, the Nirjala Ekadashi fast holds a highly revered place. The spiritual merit (punya) gained from observing this one Ekadashi is considered equivalent to that of all 24 Ekadashis observed throughout the year. On this day, there is a special rule of fasting without consuming any food or water, which is why it is called “Nirjala” Ekadashi.

It is believed that if a person is unable to observe all the Ekadashis during the year for any reason, observing just this one Nirjala Ekadashi bestows the same spiritual benefit as observing all of them. According to sacred scriptures, observing this fast helps in the destruction of sins and leads the soul toward liberation (moksha). This vrat is dedicated to Lord Vishnu, and offering water, food, and service to the needy on this day brings immense spiritual rewards. Additionally, Nirjala Ekadashi symbolizes self-restraint, inner purification, and patience, providing the devotee with both mental and spiritual strength.

The Nirjala Ekadashi Vrat Katha

According to ancient Hindu scriptures, once the Pandavas asked Maharishi Ved Vyasa how to observe the Ekadashi fast and what benefits it brings. Sage Vyasa replied that there are 24 Ekadashis in a year, and each one holds special significance. Observing these fasts helps in the destruction of sins and brings immense spiritual merit (punya).

Hearing this, Bhima (Bhimasena) expressed his concern. He said, “I am very strong and powerful, but it is impossible for me to live without food. While I can follow all other religious duties, I cannot fast. Is there a way I can observe just one fast and still receive the merit of all the Ekadashis in a year?”

To this, Sage Ved Vyasa replied, “O Bhima! There is indeed one way. You must observe a fast on the Ekadashi of the Shukla Paksha in the month of Jyeshtha, which is known as Nirjala Ekadashi. On this day, you must completely abstain from both food and water and worship Lord Vishnu with full devotion. Doing so will grant you the spiritual benefits of all 24 Ekadashis combined.” This fast is called “Nirjala” because it is observed without even drinking water. Though extremely difficult, it brings immeasurable rewards. It is believed to eradicate sins and bestow moksha (liberation).

Bhima accepted Sage Vyasa’s advice and observed the Nirjala Ekadashi fast with great resolve. He refrained from eating or drinking anything throughout the day and worshipped Lord Vishnu. As a result, Lord Vishnu blessed him with eternal merit (akshaya punya) and the boon of liberation. It is said that anyone who observes this fast with sincerity and devotion is freed from sins committed over many lifetimes and attains a place in Vishnu Lok (Vaikuntha), the abode of Lord Vishnu.
