Significance & Story Of Vat Savitri Fast

The origin of this vrat is deeply entwined with the legendary tale of Savitri, whose devotion and intelligence saved her husband Satyavan from the clutches of death. The story is narrated in the Mahabharata, in the Vana Parva, when Sage Markandeya tells Yudhishthira about the ultimate example of a pativrata nari.

According to the legend, Savitri was the beautiful and intelligent daughter of King Ashvapati of Madra. She chose Satyavan, a prince living in exile in the forest, as her husband, despite being warned by the sage Narada that he had only one year to live. Savitri accepted her destiny and married Satyavan with full devotion.

On the destined day, when Yama, the god of death, came to take Satyavan’s soul, Savitri followed him, walking barefoot, pleading, and debating with him about dharma and the essence of life and death. Her purity, devotion, and wisdom impressed Yama so much that he offered her three boons — excluding the life of her husband. With clever wording, Savitri used the boons to restore Satyavan’s kingdom, her father-in-law’s sight, and finally, to become the mother of Satyavan’s children — thus compelling Yama to restore his life.
